World Record Attempt!

Longest Badminton Marathon Doubles for MS Research

Organisers and some participants of the World Record Attempt at Badminton Doubles Marathon To mark the launch of the splendid new sports facilities at University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol a group of very enterprising students ( Ray Yip, on the left and Andrew Heygate-Brown, 2nd left.) attempted to beat the Guinness Books of Records published world record for a non-stop game of badminton in aid of MS Research. Six teams of 4 started the event on Saturday morning at 9am and most continued throughout the night and into Sunday.

final marathon badminto teamAll but one team ( Michael Pepper, Ian Wingfield, David Philips and David Lindop on the right) eventually had to drop out through injury or shear exhaustion but one intrepid team managed to continue until 12.30 on Sunday despite aching legs and drooping eyelids a grand total of 27 hours 30 min! This was indeed long enough to challenge the Guinness Book of Records entry for a similar event standing at 24 hours, 21 minutes and 19 seconds, held by Sylvia Campion, Aubrey Cox, Maureen Dunne and William Stevenson, of Ireland , set in December 2005. It remains to be seen whether or not their record attempt will be ratified by the appropriate authorities. Watch this space!!

The sum raised by this fantastic student effort has yet to be finalised. You too can show your appreciation for their amazing efforts for MS by sponsoring them on-line by clicking this secure link at CAFonline or by cheque payable to MS Research sent to MSRTE, 10 Oakwood Road, Henleaze, Bristol, BS9 4NR.
