Delivering treatment and understanding of MS
Research will provide answers to the many problems and difficulties caused by the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Everyone recognises that there is no simple solution to MS but high quality, dedicated research teams can deliver significant progress to improve treatment and understanding. The aim of MS Research is to restore to people with MS functions and capabilities lost as a result of MS by what ever means possible and to contribute to its cure.
Dr. Ketteringham was awarded Best MS Researcher of the Year which brings recognition to the also nominated Tremor project.
This research evaluated the new measurement system designed to record upper limb intention tremor in individuals with MS during functional movements of the arm. Advanced orthotics will help further significantly the understanding of upper limb tremor and develop means of suppressing unwanted arm movements and restoring useful function. This is a neglected area of disability; one where few groups conduct research.
Donations made online using efundraising have helped with funding:
- the treatment and measurement equipment and software for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and for the tremor study See picture top right
- some staff engaged in research projects
As a result an occupational therapist was engaged:
- to help people manage their condition
- to offer cognitive behavioural and life coaching skills to help people adjust to their MS.
The MS Research Unit provides assessment for an excellent FES device called WalkAide which helps to improve walking in people who have foot drop. Unlike some others, this device does not need a heel switch so eliminates the need for extra wires and restricted choices in footwear. See picture bottom right
